The Chocolate Library Short Story Competition

The Chocolate Bar Library Short Story Competition

Every bar in our Chocolate Library has a story to tell… and now it’s your turn.

The old adage goes that there is nothing better than curling up with a good book. Except, perhaps, when you can eat said book afterwards.

To help us complete our ever-expanding Chocolate Library, we’re inviting readers to pen their very own original short stories based on one of the titles, which previously baffled the tweeters of Twitter and were described by The Daily Telegraph as 'startling' and 'peculiar'. Just how we like it.

Of course you can make your own judgment: read 'The Beast Comes at Midnight','The Peculiar Bees of Salt Bay' and 'The Icebreaker' here.

The winner will receive some rather delicious prizes – more on those below – including having their entry published here on The Journal. The competition is open to anyone with a sweet tooth, and a love of a good story.

Go on. Spin us a chocolatey yarn.

The Rules

Stories should be no more than 500 words, and in English. UK and international entries are welcome.

There are three titles to choose from, and we’ve created each story's starting point… but where you take them is up to you. You should feature chocolate somewhere in the story.

'Fire in the Hive' (Milk Chocolate with Ginger & Honey)

Honey fortune heiress, Lottie Jermyn, was looking forward to the sweet life. But after a night of champagne-fuelled shenanigans she finds herself in one mighty sticky situation.

'Forever Chasing Supernovas' (Milk Chocolate filled with Passionfruit)

For the last 1707 years, four passionate astronauts have hurtled through space, on the hunt for a peculiar portal to a spell-binding dimension...

'Beyond the Abyss' (100% Dark Chocolate)

1,000ft from safety, a silent submarine is awoken with a bang. Have they finally hit rock bottom or is this the creature they have been seeking?

You should submit your entry by 26th October 2019, and we'll announce the winner on or before 1st November 2019.

The Prizes

While we aren't in the position to hand out any Pulitzers, the winner will receive one sweet-filled Sleighborne Hamper worth £500 just in time for Christmas, as well as the entire Ultimate Chocolate Bar Collection.

Runners up will receive the entire Ultimate Chocolate Bar Collection.
