Tales From the Crypt
Since 1707, our Piccadilly store has gathered no shortage of remarkable stories, including a handful that seem unwilling to fade into history. This Halloween, discover five of Fortnum’s most enduring spirits, whose tales have drifted through our halls for generations.
Among them is Mr Gaius Backholder, the formidable former grocer who now presides over the Wine Crypt, where bottles have been known to move of their own accord. On the Duke Street staircase, the Grey Lady glides silently between floors, forever mourning a lost love. Elsewhere, a Devilish Dandy continues his search for cigars, wine and, apparently, the way out, while a stove-hatted spectre roams our offices with a reputation that has unsettled even the bravest late-night visitors.
Then there is the Shivering Chef, a restless culinary soul who still keeps a watchful eye over the kitchens, particularly when Welsh rarebit is on the menu. Part folklore, part history and entirely woven into the fabric of Fortnum’s, these curious characters are less the stuff of nightmares than they are chapters in the story of our famous store. Yet for all their charm and eccentricity, their lingering presence remains enough to send the occasional shiver down the spine.

This Spiced Espresso Martini, crafted with Fortnum’s Conker Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur, brings a warming autumnal twist to the modern cocktail classic. Ingredients
MAKES 2
Ice
100ml vodka
500ml freshly brewed espresso
50ml Fortnum's Conker Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur
1 tbsp Fortnum’s Chef’s Cinnamon Honey
Coffee beans, star anise and/or cinnamon to garnish (optional)
Method
1. Place two martini glasses in the fridge to chill.
2. Fill a cocktail shaker generously with ice, then add the vodka, espresso, coffee liqueur, and honey. Shake until the outside of the shaker feels icy cold.
3. Strain into the chilled glasses and garnish each with coffee beans, star anise and a light sprinkle of cinnamon. Enjoy!
