Easter Hosting with Genevieve Harris
EASTER HOSTING
IN CONVERSATION WITH GENEVIEVE HARRIS

Over warm and well-buttered hot cross buns, a steaming pot of tea and freshly cut stems from the garden, we spent a happy few hours talking with content creator and fashion, food and interiors stylist Genevieve Harris, aka @mrs_trufflepig, in her beautiful country kitchen about all things Easter - in particular, hosting.
Easter is traditionally a time when family and friends get together and feast on spring’s produce, while children squeal with delight upon finding another foiled chocolate egg intended for the egg hunt later that day. And in perfectly timed preparation, Genevieve has chosen her favourites from across Fortnum’s Food Halls and Homeware to create the perfect Easter table whilst sharing with us her hostess with the mostess expertise. Notebooks at the ready.
It's fair to say Genevieve is well versed in hosting and it’s not only a joy but a passion of hers… ‘Nothing brings people together like food, and when you welcome people into your home and cook for them it’s the ultimate expression of love and appreciation. Some of my favourite memories have involved lots of friends squeezed around a dining room table that’s laden with food and drink, fire roaring in the background.’
Setting The Scene
‘I love reflecting the season in my tablescapes. I always start by having a little walk around the garden to see what’s in bloom or bud and pick sprigs of greenery and flowers to fill little glass jars to dot around the table. This will be my starting point when choosing how I’m going to dress the table.
'In mid-August the brightly hued Dahlias are in full swing, so I’ll match their vibrancy with a bold striped tablecloth, coloured plates and chunky glassware. In springtime in the garden is a much softer palette. Delicate green emerging shoots on the hedgerows and frothy pink cherry blossom sit well with pure white linens, silver cutlery and delicate champagne flutes.’
Notebook Tip: ‘Flowers bring a table to life but keep them small and light. Lots of small bud vases dotted along the centre of the table are not only more impactful than one large arrangement, but they also allow you to see the person sitting across from you! Stick to three colours, any more will look overwhelming and chaotic. I sometimes like to pick one main colour and work in various shades. For example, red- ranging from deep burgundy to the palest pink.’

Serve It Hot and Keep Your Cool
‘I think serving the food is JUST as important as eating it! No one wants to be stressed that the side is going to get cold, the main is taking too long in the oven, and the guests are starving! I much prefer a relaxed approach and tend to cook things that can be prepped well in advance and can be self-served. I love loading the table with sharing platters so everyone can help themselves to seconds... or thirds!’

The Table...
‘I loved creating this Easter table! Right now, the Daffodils are blooming in my garden so they’re the main floral focus. I’ve complimented their buttery yellow blooms with hints of green in the plates and glassware and linen. I just love Bordallo - it brings me (and my table) pure joy, and the serving and charger plates feel so spring like, they were just perfect.
And whilst they deliver a bold hit of green, the Halcyon Days plates and HMA DÉCOR Daisy Napkins echo the green offering but in a more subtle, delicate way. And let’s not forget the delightful Club Matters Forest Ferns Table Mats – aside from their practical use, they are a beautiful way to keep the table feeling decorated when the plates are gone. It’s the little details that make all the difference!’

What We're Eating...
‘For the menu, I’ve chosen and twist on the classic beef wellington to a spring version with lamb, which is some of the most tender and succulent lamb I’ve ever tasted, all wrapped in chicken mousse and crispy pastry. Just delicious. Not forgetting the Mint Sauce of course.
Keeping things seasonal, I’ve created a punchy anchovy riccadio caesar salad which I’ve dressed in Fortnum's Piccadilly Dressing, and lemony new potatoes with fresh herbs.’

‘And of course, an Easter feast isn’t complete without a cheeseboard, particularly one served on the Bordallo Cheese Plate with the mice! It’s hard to choose a favourite but Fortnum’s Waxed Cheddar Truckle is deliciously tangy and moist, but also vying for my attention is the velvety soft, extremely indulgent Dorset Brie.'

What We're Drinking...
‘I always like to start with a glass of bubbles, and Fortnum’s English Sparkling is a very sippable tipple! Fortnum’s Alvarinho is a beautifully crisp, fresh white wine that really echos the season for me, and the red, Fortnum’s Old Vine Garnacha, pairs perfectly with the lamb.
Fortnum’s Sparkling Tea is just such a wonderful creation if you’re not drinking. It’s so unexpected and so deliciously refreshing – it's become a staple in our household, and delights everyone who tries it!’
Eggs For Easter
'What's Easter without chocolate! The selection at Fortnum’s is incomparable.
'Regardless of the fact my eldest is 16, my kids still love an easter egg hunt in the garden, and things can get very competitive! We hide lots of little foil eggs with clues leading to a large one at the end of the hunt. This year they’re going to both get the Fortnum's Praline Scotch Egg, which is such a clever twist on the original.'

'And whilst the kids devour their finds, I like to offer a refreshing infusion. My current favourites are Fortnum’s new Ginger & Sicilian Lemon Infusion, and for those with a sweeter tooth, there’s the Mint Toffee Infusion. And I couldn’t resist the Arthur Parkinson mugs Chicken Mugs and Tray to sip from alongside a slice of delicious Simnel Cake.’
As we finish our last sip of tea and dab at the crumbs of our delicious hot cross buns, we enquire as to what Easter will look like for Genevieve this year, and she tell us ‘Easter at home will consist of a gargantuan feast at ours with friends and family, a raucous easter egg hunt, a long dog walk on the beach with the whole family, and watching at least one movie cuddled up on the sofa with the fires going…. in no particular order!’.
Sounds wonderful to us. Happy Easter.

Genevieve's Five Fortnum's Favourites
~~~
The king of biscuits. So indulgent, they sit somewhere between a biscuit and a chocolate bar. Everyone I’ve bought them for has proclaimed love for them. They come in the most beautiful tins, that are refillable too!
How could I not add a touch of truffle? I could spend all day wandering around Fortnum’s Food Hall, it’s a treasure trove of culinary delights. I received this truffle oil at Christmas as a gift, and it is exquisite. A little goes a long way. A drizzle on your fettuccini, a few drops in your scrambled eggs…it elevates the ordinary into something extraordinary.
My favourite tipple is a gin and tonic. I’ve never been a fan of pink or flavoured gins, I like mine very dry and aromatic, but this one changed my mind. It’s not at all sweet like other pink varieties I’ve tried and has a gorgeous complex flavour. Crafted in Fortnum’s copper stills in their Picadilly Food &Drink Studio, the rosy pink gin is distilled with British apples and Fortnum’s Earl Grey Tea among an array of traditional ingredients.
I love my Bordallo Pinheiro vibrant green cabbage plates, and when I spotted this matching green cheese plate with the mice it was instant love.
In my book, candles aren’t just for evening. I love indulging in the little luxuries in life, and if I’m having a bad day or it’s gloomy outside, I love to light a candle in the daytime while I’m working at my desk. A beautifully scented one like this citrus scent makes all the difference to my focus and state of mind.
