Fortnum's Alvarinho, Anselmo Mendes, 75cl

Anselmo Mendes is regarded as the leading producer of Alvarinho (more commonly known outside Portugal as Albariño). He has worked in Monção e Melgaço since the 1990s, farming small Atlantic-influenced vineyards on granite soils near the Spanish border. Anselmo champions low yields, skin contact, lees ageing and small-parcel vinification to add texture and complexity. This wine is a long way from simple Vinho Verde stereotypes. Aromas of apricot and peach are followed by an invigorating palate of tangerine and lemon peel, which will pair beautifully with shellfish, white meats and avocado salads. Family-owned and obsessively site-focused, Anselmo demonstrates how Alvarinho can rival Europe’s greatest white varieties.
