Calling All Polar Explorers
In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton’s expedition to Antarctica aboard Endurance became one of the most astonishing rescue missions of modern times after their ship was crushed by the worst pack ice ever recorded.
Shackleton had ordered several cases of goods from Fortnum’s for the expedition, and came in personally to buy a birthday cake for a crew member, which he hid in his sock. Most of the items were sweet, colourful treats, tinned luxuries, alongside Truffled Game Pâté - an essential provision for such an expedition.
110 years later, 34-year-old Owen Horton is on his own polar adventure with the Australian Antarctic Program, and inspired by Shackleton’s shopping list, has packed our Explorer’s Biscuit Tin and finest Darjeeling Tea. With adventure having long been at the heart of Fortnum’s we are proud to accompany Owen (in delicious form) on this expedition and hope our provisions provide a comforting taste of home.
