Perfect Countryside Picnic Spots in Hong Kong
Picked, packed and ready for adventure, a Fortnum's picnic is an essential for any day trip from Hong Kong. Discover three of our favourites here.
Four dozen bottles of Champagne. That’s right, just the essentials were provided in 1922, when Fortnum’s supplied the first British expedition to Everest. Our hampers were also on hand with provisions at the excavation of the tomb of Tutunkhaumn, set sail across the Indian ocean, and recently embarked on a 10,000 mile journey through 23 countries on top of a very old Land Rover.
So you see, adventure is in our DNA. And while you’re welcome to bring a Fortnum’s consignment next you scale up Tai Mo Shan, we’ve prepped a list of more immediate countryside excursions (though no less adventurous, we think) that will make for the perfect day away in Hong Kong when you're not exploring some of the hotspots in the city.
Autumn is the best season to venture outside and, with restrictions respectfully observed, we think it’s a great time to take your picnic on the road for a spot of tea paired with fresh air. A pit-stop for food, drinks, and accessories at our K11 MUSEA flagship is a must before you and your co-pilots (up to four, as safety measures require) head with fully stocked picnic hampers to some of our favourite day-trip destinations below.

Victoria Peak Garden
REASONS TO VISIT
You won’t have to venture far for our first pick, Victoria Peak Garden – mere minutes from The Peak Tower Terminus – but you’ll be shielded from city views and transported to an English country garden, replete with Victorian gazebos, wooden picnic tables and gracefully manicured lawns. Whether you’re hiking, tramming or driving up to this quintessential mountain-top location, you’re sure to find a shady spot to set up basecamp and unpack your provisions. Pets are welcome, too, so an all-inclusive outdoor adventure awaits.
WHAT TO TAKE
A proper Victorian expedition requires a robust lunch box - like our Eau de Nil Cool Bag - to make sure all your treats are kept nice and cool.
Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, Sai Kung
REASONS TO VISIT
Step back millions of years in time for a rocking picnic setting unlike any other. Unique to Hong Kong, the geologically significant UNESCO Global Geopark is vast and varied – much like Fortnum’s larders – so choose an appealing part of the park and set forth with your forks. Whether you’re after High Island’s honey-coloured volcanic rock columns (which, we admit, remind us of stacks of our Tall Tins), or you’re headed to the beaches of Sharp Island, with their ‘pineapple bun’ boulders, you’ll be much inspired for a day of feasting.
WHAT TO TAKE
By far the easiest way to carry your feast across stony distances, our Canvas Picnic Backpack set for two will have you elegantly dining your rocks off.
Inspiration Lake, Lantau
REASONS TO VISIT
Need more peaceful picnic inspiration? We have just the placid lake for you. While Lantau has plenty of manmade attractions (including the magical theme park next door), this is one that will leave you naturally soothed and relaxed. Mountain views and a shimmering lake with water fountains and cascades set the scene for picnicking in utmost serenity. There’s an arboretum for a woodsy stroll, or you can rent a pedal boat or Surrey bike – all perfectly idyllic.
WHAT TO TAKE
This is a must have picnic essential, a cosy and comfortable picnic rug. Featuring handy straps for carrying to your chosen destination.
