Marmalade and Fortnum & Mason
A brief history
Thick-cut, thin-cut and all cuts in-between: since the 1800s, we’ve been joyfully spreading marmalade on our morningtime toast.
The first varieties we sold were tins of Dundee and Orange marmalade, way back in 1849 — but by 1914, our range of marmalades had grown to include Lemon, Tonic, Ginger, Green Fig, Jaffa Orange and Morello Cherry varieties.
In 1931, an enduring favourite — Sir Nigel’s Marmalade — made its first appearance, after the revered creator of Hammersmith’s Lyric Theatre, Sir Nigel Playfair, specifically requested a dark marmalade, with very thick peel. Ever-willing to rustle up a new marmalade, we obliged, and the rest is history. Well, marmalade.
Today, Fortnum’s is home to no fewer than 42 different marmalades, and our obsession with this ever-so-citrusy stuff has even led to the creation of our Sir Nigel’s Marmalade Vodka — although that’s one marmalade creation we don’t recommend at breakfast…
