In 1996, Vincent Chen was inspired by a flowering camellia plant in the Waikato district of northern New Zealand to try to plant camellia sinensis bushes. Starting with simple tea cuttings, today Zealong Tea Estate has over 1.2 million bushes that are thriving on over 40 hectares of Waikato’s unique and organic environment.
With traditional Chinese-style rolled ‘balled oolong’ leaves, this tea has a distinctively fragrant and floral aroma.
To brew, heat freshly drawn water to 95°C and, using one rounded teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person, brew for approximately 1-3 minutes. Zealong is best enjoyed without milk.

What is Zealong Tea?
Our Zealong tea - which takes its name from a combination of “New Zealand” and “Oolong” - is produced on the Zealong Tea Estate where Waikato plants flourish in the pure clean environment, producing tea that excels in aroma and taste. New Zealand has the ideal combination of abundant rainfall, sunshine, free-draining acidic soil and the right temperature for growing tea.
In fact, the Zealong Estate has become a pioneer of tea culture in New Zealand. Today, 1.2 million Camellia sinensis bushes are lovingly nurtured by the estate’s farm team, and the impressive tea rows provide a safe haven to an abundance of native birds and wildlife.
