Penfolds St Henri Shiraz, 75cl

St Henri is a time-honoured and alternative expression of shiraz. Matured in an assortment of old large vats that allow the wine to develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character, this red is rich and plush when young and gains soft, earthy, mocha-like characters with age. Although a small proportion of cabernet may sneak into the blend, the focal point for St Henri remains shiraz.

White plum, fresh fig and charcuterie savouries on the fore palate, leading to cut-rhubarb and liquorice root. Tannins which are dry but not puckering and deliver a long, lingering finish. Delicious with beef bourguignon; the balanced acidity and tannin cutting through the richness of the sauce and supporting the meat.
