If you are after Rioja in the traditional oak-aged style, then look no further than the Cubillo, produced by one of the greatest Rioja bodegas, Lopez de Heredia. This blend of Tempranillo, Garnacho, Mazuelo and Graciano, has been aged for three years in oak with another two in the bottle prior to release, making it nearly old enough to be classified as a Gran Reserva, and offers outstanding value. It is also a lot better than many Gran Reservas on the market with its bright plum fruit, and balsamic notes on the mid-palate and soft tannins on the deliciously fresh finish.
