Fortnum's Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Andre Brunel, 75cl

This opulent red wine, made from the area’s classic Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre blend and heady with plum, raspberry, vanilla and liquorice overlaid with a perfume of spice, hails from one of France’s most prestigious appellations. The Brunel family have been growing grapes in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since the 17th century and their relationship with Fortnum’s dates back 30 years; the estate’s name, Domaine Les Cailloux, is a reference to the poor soil (caillou means pebble) that makes such rich wine. This will go beautifully with game and with stronger-flavoured vegetable dishes.
