Italy

Second only to France, Italy makes what is probably the best wine in the world. Some of the most desirable reds are the Barolos from Piedmont, made with the Nebbiolo grape – and indeed Fortnum’s has its own label from esteemed producer G D Vajra. In Tuscany, the “Super Tuscan” wines such as Sassicaia are made with varieties from Bordeaux – a truly sumptuous purchase. A land of great wine-growing varieties from the cool climate in Friuli to the heat of Sicily, Italy’s outstanding red wines vary from the light, fresh and fragrant to the rich, full-bodied and fruity.
