Autumn Entertaining

Autumn is quite possibly the most generous season of them all. Sure, summer has its moment in the sun and winter is always filled with joy. And yes, spring is positively lovely, but there’s something enchanting about autumn.

In autumn, the food on our plates turn golden and delicious, and the changing of season has got us foraging for flavour at Fortnum's.

We’ve curated our most abundant seasonal flavours to eat, drink and enjoy with your friends and family, as well as some very helpful tips on how to make your dining table that extra seasonal. It’s time to cosy up and Gather Together.

Lay the Table

As we all know, the table setting nowadays is just as important as the food itself - the nice napkins alone just won't cut it. Thankfully, we know a way or two to really freshen up your dining table.

Picking a theme is a wonderful place to begin, and it wouldn’t be an autumn gathering if there wasn’t a pumpkin or two scattered around. Visually stunning and each one unique, they’re perfect for your tablescaping theme as well as being a part of your menu. Simply brush generous slices with honey and roast in oven, then serve with crumbled feta, fresh coriander and sprinkle with pomegranate seeds. Fresh elements on a tablescape will always make the space look inviting and can create a sense of calm or drama. Whether you’re using fresh-cut flowers or dried, mix them together to add layers and texture, and don’t forget to blend in artificial foliage throughout – this is a great way to build up depth and something you can keep to re-use again and again.

Start Pouring

The next stage is drinks. For us, rosé should be enjoyed all year round and our new Rosé Prosecco is the ultimate celebration starter. A classic sparkling style, it is a blend of Pinot Noir and Glera. The grapes are harvested by hand and the juice is fermented for six months – with a further month in bottle before its release. The resulting cuvée is bursting with strawberry, raspberry and pink pepper aromas. Elegant and crisp, leading into a lively finish. It pairs deliciously with a creamy risotto, smoked salmon and molten chocolate pudding.

For some bolder sipping, our Crozes Hermitage, which is produced by Laurent Fayolle, is an supremely elegant wine. Made from Syrah grapes, it combines notes of black cherry fruit with peppery spice and has a tremendous depth of flavour. Best enjoyed alongside a ready-to-cook Beef or Vegetarian Wellington.

For something white, our Upper Yarra Valley Chardonnay is complex, taut and toasty with crisp lemon fruit and a steely mineral core. It’s an absolutely delicious and adventurous white that one could mistake for 1er Cru Chablis. The perfect partner to our made in Piccadilly Salmon en Croute.

Start Feasting

When it comes to Pumpkins, they aren't just visually stunning - they also make the perfect addition to your autumn menu. Our tip? Simply brush generous slices with honey and roast in oven, then serve with crumbled feta, fresh coriander and sprinkle with pomegranate seeds. To dress, impress with our latest Single Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Produced in Spain exclusively for Fortnum's, it’s crafted from olives grown on 200-year old Spanish olive trees in the family-run estate of El Hoyo in Extremadura.

And now for dessert, after all that feasting there is nothing easier to prepare up than the Italian classic Affogato. Scoop good quality vanilla ice cream into your finest teacups and brew a fresh shot of espresso for everyone and simply pour over. Crowd-pleasing, indulgent and perfect with a biscotti for dipping, even a piece of shortbread would work well here.
