Fortnum and Mason Food and Drink Awards - Terms of Entry

The annual Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards recognise the very best writers, broadcasters and photographers in food and drink.

There are 13 categories and an independent panel of professional judges, led by Ewan Venters, CEO of Fortnum & Mason, who will select the winners from work published or broadcast during 2019.

Writers in the media, print or online, and photographers and individual broadcasters may enter themselves, or they may be entered by their publishers or agents, into one or more of the 13 categories set out below, on the following terms and conditions:

How to Enter

- Entries are made by logging onto the Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards website and following the instructions on the website.

- Entries must be received between 8am (UK time) on 5 December 2019 and 12pm (UK time) on 31 January 2020. We must have also received the copies of the relevant work (see Copies of the work below) by that time too.

- There is no cost to enter and no purchase is necessary.

- The judges will decide which entry they consider to be the best overall in each of the judged categories: the decision of the judges is final and correspondence will not be entered into.

- In relation to the Personality category voted for by the public , notwithstanding the number of votes cast for each entrant, Fortnum & Mason reserves the right to select the recipient of the award.

- The winners will be the individual writer, photographer or broadcaster (as applicable).

- Winners will be informed that they have won an award at a presentation event to be hosted in 14 May 2020. We will inform you of the exact date and time before the event.

Eligibilty

- Individuals who write in the media, print or online, and photographers and broadcasters can all enter, or they may be entered by their publishers or agents.

- Entries must relate to work(s) that have been first published or transmitted in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland between 1 January and 31 December 2019.

- There is no limit on the number of categories that a person can be entered into except for the written categories (1-10 below), where only one entry can be made per writer in each category.

- Each writer, photographer or broadcaster can only be entered into a category once, except for the Programme category.

- A separate submission is made for each writer, photographer or broadcaster.

- A separate submission must be made for each writer, photographer or broadcaster (i.e. however two people may be entered in a single submission, for example, if a work is written by two people.

- You must disclose if a work has been ghost written or if more than 50% of its content originates from anyone other than the designated writer and your prize will be shared with them.

Category-specific rules

- 1-6. Book categories: A book may only be entered into one Book category (i.e. the same book cannot be entered into multiple Book categories).

- 1-10. Written categories: A writer may only be entered once in each written category.

- 7-10. Writer categories: Two pieces of work must be submitted for each writer in each category.

- 12. Programme category: Multiple entries may be made into the Programme category (a feature or one programme from each series).

- 13. Radio or Podcast category: Multiple entries can be made, but only ONE programme per series.

Copies of the work

Four copies of the relevant work(s) or, in the case of an e-book, a link with free access to the relevant work(s) must be provided with or shortly after each entry. Hard copies are non-returnable and must be sent to our address at: Fortnum & Mason, 181 Piccadilly, London W1A IER marked FAO: Lindsay Stewart.

Work, REMOVE if published online, must be from a website aimed principally at the UK or Republic of Ireland. If there is any doubt as to where a website is aimed, the decision of the judges will be final.

Categories

1.FOOD BOOK For a non-recipe book about food, food culture, region or history.

2. DEBUT FOOD BOOK For an author's first book about food, food culture, region or history.

3. COOKERY BOOK For a recipe-focused book about the preparation and cooking of food.

4. DEBUT COOKERY BOOK For an author's first recipe-focused book about the preparation and cooking of food.

5. DRINK BOOK For a book about drink, drink culture, region or history. The content of the book must be original or, in the case of annual guides or updates, substantially revised, with at least 75% new material.

6. DEBUT DRINK BOOK For an author's first book about drink, drink culture, region or history.

7. FOOD WRITER For writing on any aspect of food in any media.

8. DRINK WRITER For writing on any aspect of drink in any media.

9. COOKERY WRITER For recipe-led writing about the preparation and cooking of food in any media.

10. RESTAURANT WRITER For restaurant reviews in any media

11. PHOTOGRAPHER For images of food and drink published in any media.

12. PROGRAMME For Food or Drink programme over 30 minutes on any platform.

13. RADIO OR PODCAST For a radio programme or podcast on food or drink.

Prizes

The winning writer, photographer or broadcaster (as the case may be) in each category will receive a trophy, an iconic Fortnum & Mason Hamper and a bottle of Fortnum & Mason Vintage Champagne. Fortnum & Mason reserves the right to verify a winner's eligibility before awarding a prize.

Other terms

We accept no responsibility for entries not successfully completed due to a technical fault of any kind or otherwise. Incomplete entries or entries that do not comply with these terms and conditions will not be considered valid for entry. The Promoter accepts no responsibility for any entries which are not completed for any reason.

By making a submission for anyone other than yourself you confirm that you have the authority to enter the relevant writer, photographer or broadcaster in that category.

Fortnum & Mason may produce promotional material in support of the winning entries and you will, if requested by Fortnum & Mason and wherever possible, ensure that such material is distributed with and the official Fortnum & Mason winner designation and artwork (as provided by Fortnum & Mason) is used with and in copies of the entry and in future works by the writer, photographer or broadcaster in.

Fortnum & Mason accepts no responsibility for any damage, loss, injury or disappointment suffered or incurred by you as a result of entering the awards or the winners accepting the prize, except for death or personal injury that is caused by its negligence or where the damage, loss, injury or disappointment is caused by its fraud. The products won must be stored and consumed in accordance with their instructions.

PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR AWARD (Public vote)

The public may vote for 1 of 10 pre-selected personalities to win the Personality of the year 2020 award, or nominate a food & drink personality of their choice. The vote is open from 8am (UK time) on the 9th December 2019 to 11.59pm (UK time) on the 1st April 2020 (Draw Window).

Every member of the public that votes for the Personality of the year during the Draw Window will automatically be entered into a prize draw to 'win a Fortnum & Mason hamper'. Entry is subject to the terms and conditions below. Only one entry is permitted per email address and if there are more only the first entry will be eligible.

DIGITAL CREATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD (Public vote)
