Tennis Season Picnic Essentials

Everything you need for an al fresco feast

With tennis season underway, we've picked out a selection of food and drink best enjoyed to the percussive soundtrack of high-speed serve-and-volleying.

And while we can't guarantee the weather will play ball we can at least ensure - whether you're watching from courtside or further afield - that your refreshments will all be sure-fire winners.

From scrumptious picnics to summertime spirits and our own twist on the ubiquitous strawberries and cream, explore our champion treats below. Play!

#1: A Fortnum's Picnic

Picked, packed and ready-to-go, our delicious picnics have all been created with summertime dining in mind: whether you're eating al fresco alone, or with a big party in tow.

Tucking into a Fortnum's picnic in the sunshine is a truly great British activity, especially when enjoyed alongside a season of exceptional summer sport.

#2: A Famous Scotch Egg

If your appetite is for something a little more handheld than a full-blown picnic, there is only one option for the discerning tennis-watcher: a famous Fortnum's Scotch Egg.

What's more, if you're in the mood for an even more tenuous reason to tuck in, it's even shaped like a tennis ball.

#3: Sunshine-Ready Summer Cup

As thoroughly British and wonderful as the sport of tennis itself - and made in nearby Battersea, no less - our Summer Cup cocktail is made from an infusion of Fortnum's own London Dry Gin, Pedro Ximinez sherry, and our Moroccan Mint, Chai and Earl Grey teas.

Best enjoyed served over ice with good-quality lemonade and fresh summer fruits, it's a little taste of the British summertime.

#4: Strawberries and...Champagne!

Strawberries and cream is undoubtedly a classic part of any British summertime soirée, but we think our Strawberry and Champagne preserve - delicious on scones and crumpets, or as the filling in a homemade jam tart or Victoria sponge - gives that winning doubles partnership a real run for its money.

Best of all, a jar of this delicious stuff - which is really made with a liberal dash of our very own Champagne and real strawberries, lasts considerably longer than a bowl of strawberries and cream...

#5: A Fortnum's Parasol

Yes, technically it's an umbrella in the image above. But we're taking a positive approach and assuming that rather than keeping the rain off, this will serve as a useful way to create some shade beneath the blazing British summertime sun.

That said: if the skies should turn a little grey then this will also keep the rain at bay. To the courts!
