Sustainability & Social Responsibility at Fortnum's

Sustainability & Social Responsibility at Fortnum's

As a family run business that’s been around for over 300 years, it is our responsibility to conduct business today in a way that is sustainable for the next 300. We have a rich history of not only championing traditions but also driving innovation to stay relevant to our ever changing world. Although we have far-ranging ambitions for progress, the frequent steps taken to achieve our targets are delivered on a day-to-day basis here at Fortnum’s.

We have four sustainability and social responsibility pillars: People, Product, Packaging and Planet. These drive our commitment to doing more things more often to create long-lasting change, with the help of our suppliers, employees and customers.

People

People

When all’s said and done, our success comes down to the magic of our people. Without their diversity, talent and support, we simply wouldn’t be where we are today. It is these areas which will underpin our sustainability and legacy for innovation and creativity in the future.

Listening to our People

Listening to our People

We believe in attracting the broadest range of talent and embracing true diversity of thought and individuality. We currently enjoy the diversity of over 60 different nationalities, and regularly ask our people for their feedback or ideas and act on their suggestions. From monthly Employee Listening Groups, to starter and Leaver Surveys and interviews, to an annual Employee Survey, our door is continually opening to learning about how we can improve and make Fortnum’s an even better place to work.
Talent of Tomorrow

Talent of Tomorrow

Each year, a number of fresh thinking people successfully graduate from our thriving apprenticeship programme, which gives them the opportunity to learn and improve their skills whilst working in roles at Fortnum’s. Launched in 2016, it has doubled in size each year, and now embraces an ever-growing list of disciplines, providing numerous routes for people to fuel their careers.
Recognition & Celebration

Recognition & Celebration

Every quarter we recognise those who have excelled in living our values with the Fortnum’s Values Awards. And in June 2019, to celebrate individual achievements on an even greater level, we launched the Exceptional People Awards, for endeavours in exceptional service, outstanding contribution, and pioneering and positive change.

Product

Product

At Fortnum’s we make and select the best possible products, and work hard to ensure that they are socially and ethically sourced. That’s a principle we honour across our entire business, from food to home. We champion artisan products, seek out the finest materials and ingredients, and strive for sustainable production and quality at every turn.

Goodbye Palm-Oil

Goodbye Palm-Oil

Since the end of 2019 we no longer manufacture any food products containing sustainable palm-oil under our brand – and, naturally, the taste is still delicious.
GM Free Food

GM Free Food

Since 2002 our own-label food has been free from genetically modified ingredients, and we monitor all our suppliers to ensure this is maintained.
Supporting Craft

Supporting Craft

From the shores of Truro in Cornwall to Taynuilt in the depths of Scotland, we work with numerous British suppliers, who practice traditional and artisan methods of craft and production, celebrating the skills that have been honoured over many years.

Packaging

Packaging

Ever since we packed off our very first hamper back in the 1700s, re-use has remained at the core of Fortnum’s principles. We continue to challenge ourselves to rethink areas of our business where the packaging could work harder and smarter to reduce the impact on the environment.

Removing Single Use Plastic

Removing Single Use Plastic

We have not sold single use plastic bottles in our stores or restaurants since 2002. We are encouraging our customers and employees not to use single use plastic and have committed to phase out the use of it from our primary own-label ranges by 2022, replacing it with plant-based, domestically compostable alternatives.
Thoughtfully Packaged

Thoughtfully Packaged

We recently launched a new Cold Brew Infusion range that has 100% home compostable packaging, made from sustainability sourced cardboard and plant-based film. The teabag is also made from plants and can be disposed of with your food waste collection.
Recyclable Packaging

Recyclable Packaging

Currently 76% of our packaging is recyclable. We are increasing the recycled content in all our packaging, so that on average 50% of it will be recycled, and for a number of key products the packaging will soon be made with 100% recycled content.

Planet

Planet

Decreasing our reliance on the planet’s resources has never been more critical. That’s why we’re putting our waste to good use, increasing our recycling facilities, and making every effort to help clean up the impact we make on the environment.

Local Pollution Reduction

Local Pollution Reduction

There is a real need to improve the quality of the air that we breathe in London. This is why in 2018, we installed 200m² of moss and wild flower panels on the roof, to improve air quality and carbon removal around our Piccadilly store.
Food Waste to Positive Use

Food Waste to Positive Use

Every day, in a bid to reduce food waste and food poverty, surplus food from our stores and restaurants in London is picked up by the Felix Project, a London charity, and distributed to charities and schools so they can provide healthy meals and help the most vulnerable in our society. In 2018/19, Fortnum’s donated food worth £40,000 to the project.
Supporting Our Pollinators

Supporting Our Pollinators

Our famous bee hives have been on our roof in Piccadilly for the last decade. In recognition of both the importance of biodiversity and the need to protect our beloved bee population in the UK, we’ve since extended our hive network to other locations across London, including Somerset House, St. Pancras Station, Hoxton Docks, Bermondsey – and soon The Royal Albert Hall.
