Founded in 1930, Château Musar is located 20km north of Beirut in the Christian enclave of Ghazir, and is run by the third generation of the Hochar family. The grapes are sourced at 1000 metres above sea level in Lebanon’s Western Bekaa Valley, a shallow, fertile basin, running between the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon mountain ranges which has been home to the vine for 6,000 years. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan is farmed organically and differs every year according to the harvest. The slightly cooler 1998 vintage is Cinsault-dominant, giving a lighter appearance in the glass, but with many layers of complexity. Initial soft red fruit, sweet spice and mushroom notes develop into roasted coffee and caramel flavours. Decant the wine and give it time to reveal its full power. Serve with red meats and hard cheeses.
