The owners of Neudorf, Tim and Judy Finn, were initially told in the late 70s that growing grapes in Nelson was a ‘dodgy practice’ and were strongly advised to think about sheep. Fortunately for wine lovers, the Finns had dreams of a higher station and their striving culminated in 2009 when the Neudorf estate was heralded by Tom Stevenson in 2009 as “New Zealand’s greatest wine producer”. Their 33 hectares of vines are spread over two vineyards Moutere, and Brightwater, at the top end of North Island. Their single vineyard Brightwater Riesling is truly sensational. Very fresh, with limey, crisp fruit and a piercing streak of riverstone minerality that runs through the core.
