Add To BagThis is one of the great red estates of Burgenland and Austria, predominantly for the reds, but increasingly for sweet wines too. There are many dimensions to this estate and vineyards are scattered throughout the north east side of Lake Neusiedl, with different varieties planted on different terroirs. Umathum makes a wide range, and exports only a small proportion. But the signature grape variety has always been Zweigelt, though St Laurent is also favoured, and increasingly, Blaufränkisch – replanted on south-facing terraces overlooking the lake at Jois, and tracing its origins as a vineyard back to the 11th century. The wines have a lot of personality, particularly the Zweigelt, which has a muscular and rich fruitiness, but still a strong mineral touch.
