The house of Clicquot was founded in 1772, but owes its current fame to the founder's remarkable daughter-in-law, Nicole barbe Clicquot. Widowed in 1805, she developed the business both technically and commercially. In 1816 she invented the method by which, to this day, all champagne is clarified. To protect the house from the imitations this spawned, she introduced the famous yellow label by which its wine is recognised around the world.
