Last year’s Royal Wedding proved that the British appetite for a tremendous street party never falters; across the land streets were closed, tables laid, bunting flown and champagne corks popped as we celebrated the big day with a huge alfresco lunch. Barely a year later, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is the perfect excuse for another nationwide street party, not least because we have a four-day weekend in which to enjoy it. Here at Fortnum’s we’ve been gathering together a host of ideas to help you throw a fantastic party, complete with patriotic bunting, Jubilee champagne and a very British menu.
Set the scene
First, lay your tables – the sheer number of guests will make proper crockery a little difficult, so we have designed a Jubilee party range of plates, cups and napkins as well as an easy-to-assemble cake stand, all emblazoned with the Queen’s Beasts, the central theme of our Jubilee range. Colourful, cheerful and patriotic, the Beasts are the perfect backdrop for your party, and they also feature on Fortnum’s Jubilee bunting, a string of exuberant flags linked with eau de nil ribbon.
Raise your glasses
Next, the drinks – once the champagne is flowing, the party can really get started. As the celebrations are in sunny June, a summer cocktail might be in order; our Bellini Box combines prosecco with peach nectar, while our Kir Royale set blends Fortnum’s Brut Reserve Champagne with English cassis (the components are available separately if a larger quantity is required). In addition, we have any amount of high-quality champagne and sparkling wine to hand, of course; simply order by the bottle or case or opt for our Celebration Chiller, which combines champagne, rosé champagne, prosecco and English sparkling wine in a smart Fortnum’s cooler bag. Our Jubilee Champagne, a superb Chardonnay fizz with a commemorative label, also comes in a cooler bag to ensure that it is served in perfect condition.
Let the feast begin
As a street party is technically a picnic, we’ve got this covered, as picnics are Fortnum’s speciality. Our range of Jubilee food and drink is the ideal place to start, and can be combined with our fine fresh food to tremendous effect. For example, you could pair Fortnum’s peerless Cheddar with our Coronation Chutney and a plate of salad to make an instant Ploughman’s Lunch; make smoked salmon sandwiches with Fortnum’s Scottish smoked salmon and a generous spreading of creamy Jersey butter; or lay out a feast of hand-raised pork pies, freshly made Scotch eggs and a British Isles Cheese Selection, served with Biscuits for Cheese and any of our chutneys and fruit cheeses. Less is more, as they say, and a simple buffet of fine British foods can never fail to please.
A proper Jubilee tea
It’s summer, so there must be scones – which will taste even better served with our Jubilee Royal Sovereign Strawberry Preserve or even our Rose Petal Jelly, made with petals grown in a single garden in Oxfordshire. Either of these divine preserves would also taste good in a homemade Victoria Sandwich cake – or just in jam sandwiches for the children. A fruit cake is a must; our Jubilee Fruit Cake is filled with ground almonds and plump dried fruits, pepped up with a dash of Shropshire Apple Brandy and crowned with a layer of glacé fruits. To complete the feast, brew up a pot of Jubilee Blend Tea and serve with a tin of Jubilee Biscuits, Cornish clotted cream digestives half-dipped in dark chocolate. Not only are they royally delicious, but also the wind-up tin plays ‘God Save the Queen’ – the perfect ending to a happy and patriotic day.
An instant feast
If you’ve opted for a picnic rather than a street party, a fresh Fortnum’s picnic might be the simplest way to ensure a memorable feast. Especially for the big day, we have devised a Fortnum’s Jubilee Picnic for two, a smart cooler bag containing smoked salmon sandwiches, Coronation Chicken Salad and Eton Mess as well as the necessary cutlery. For an even more substantial feast, our Fresh Food Picnics feature Fortnum’s Outdoor Feast – including crudités, poached salmon, a freshly made pie and strawberries for pudding, as well as a bottle of Muscadet – or Fortnum’s Three-Course Formal Picnic, a grand feast starting with crab and avocado and finishing with raspberry trifle, all packed into a useful cooler bag.
A party in a hamper
Finally, if convenience is your key priority, our Jubilee Party Hamper combines the best of our street party suggestions in a single hamper. This classic wicker hamper contains party poppers as well as Jubilee napkins, bunting, paper cups and plates and includes Jubilee champagne, Jubilee Cake and a Jubilee Musical Biscuit Tin with which to round off your feast. It is the perfect choice for this very promising weekend.
