Of all the momentous events of 2012, none promises to be more joyous than the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Her great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria, is the only other British monarch to have reached this exceptional landmark, in 1897, when Fortnum & Mason was not quite 200 years old.
In the six decades since Queen Elizabeth’s accession, both sovereign and subject have remained stalwart and true. Her Majesty has kept scrupulously to her Coronation vows, and Fortnum’s has remained committed to its traditional ethos. This fidelity informs our commemorative Jubilee range – which we present here – with additional flourishes in honour of this great celebration. Royal Sovereign strawberries enhance the strawberry preserve and even the biscuit tin trumpets the National Anthem.
The design inspiration for the Fortnum’s Jubilee range harks back to Queen Elizabeth’s coronation. It takes as its inspiration the Queen’s Beasts, animals real and mythical that feature on the Coats of Arms of several of our queen’s forebears. Each of these usually fearsome beasts has been reinterpreted in jaunty colours, playing a musical instrument - all the better to join our celebratory parade. As they march through our collection, they create beautiful, keepable containers that will endure long after the contents have become a distant, fond memory.
