Portugal is famed for its indigenous grape varieties, which produce an exciting array of wines with real identity. The main wine-producing region is Duoro, where port is also made. The main grape is Touriga Nacional and Touriga Roriz (known in Spain as Tempranillo). An up-and-coming region is Bairrada, around 100km south of Porto; a region with an Atlantic climate and chalky soil, wines nurtured here used to be too tannic due to the difficult ripening conditions. Today it is an exciting new region for red wine, particularly with its Baga grape. Portuguese red wine is rich, fruity and medium- or full-bodied, and we have arguably the best wine producer in Dirk Neipoort, who makes our own-label Douro.
